Clinical Applications of Low and High Power Lasers in Dentistry

The course aims to provide knowledge about the basic physical concepts of Phototherapy related to the interaction of light with biological tissues, effects of Photobiomodulation Therapy with low-power lasers and LEDs, antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy, systemic vascular Photobiomodulation (ILIB), and photothermal effects of high-power lasers, focusing on the mechanisms of action, effects, protocols, and clinical applications of lasers in different specialties of Dentistry.

Course Details

To empower dental surgeons in the clinical use of Laser and LED technologies as an important differentiator and therapeutic resource within Dentistry, broadly, safely, and feasibly incorporating Phototherapy into the daily clinical practice of Dentistry, bringing its benefits to patients.

June 27 (morning and afternoon)

  • Concepts and fundamentals of laser physics and interaction of light with biological tissues
  • Properties of low and high power lasers and LEDs
  • Mechanism of action and interaction of lasers with biological tissues
  • Dosimetry in Phototherapy
  • Biosafety in the use of radiation, indications and contraindications in the use of lasers
  • Concepts, effects, and clinical applications of Photobiomodulation Therapy with low-power lasers and LEDs, systemic vascular Photobiomodulation (ILIB), antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy, and high-power lasers.

June 28 (morning and afternoon)

  • Clinical applications of lasers and presentation of clinical cases in the specialties of Dentistry: Operative Dentistry, Endodontics, Surgery, Stomatology, Periodontology, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, TMD and Orofacial Pain, Laser acupuncture, Marketing.
  • Clinical protocols for low and high power lasers in daily clinical practice in Dentistry:
  • Photobiomodulation Therapy with low-power lasers and LEDs: concepts, mechanisms, protocols, and clinical applications in inflammatory processes and repair.
  • Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): concepts, photosensitizers, protocols, and clinical applications.
  • Systemic Vascular Photobiomodulation (ILIB): concepts, application routes, mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, and protocols.
  • High-power lasers: concepts, mechanisms, protocols, and clinical applications in Dentistry.
  • Hands-on – Laboratory practice with low and high power lasers and LEDs, guidance on the use of equipment.

June 29 (morning)

  • Demonstrative clinical practice with low and high power laser equipment and LEDs

At the end of the training, participants are entitled to a Training Certificate in accordance with Regulatory Decree No. 35/2002, as well as certification recognised and issued by SIGO, a governmental entity, as stipulated in Decree-Law No. 14/2017, of 26 January.

Our training, and consequently our certificates, also comply with the requirements of the Labour Code, Law No. 93/2019, of 4 September, which establishes the obligation for continuous training in companies, stipulating a minimum duration of 40 hours annually per worker.

  • Hold a higher education qualification or be enrolled in Dental Medicine;
  • Prior and mandatory completion of the Admission Form.
  • Submission of the following documents:
  1. Curriculum Vitae;
  2. Copy of Qualification Certificate;
  3. Copy of Citizen Card/Identity Card and NIF;
  4. Copy of OMD card or, if foreign, local Dental Order card.
